Well, actually Oui, Oui ‘s Facebook page was launched 10 years ago and Facebook is a great reminder of how far we have come with a community of more than 160, 000.
However, I had launched Oui, Oui, Je Speak Franglais in 2009 after I had applied to le programme d’assistants de langue and ended up in Lille. I literally remember pacing around trying to come up with names, that were witty, fun yet easy to role of one’s tongue et voilà, the name Oui, Oui, Je Speak Franglais came to mind.
Oui, Oui, started off as a campaign because I wanted to inspire my students in Lille, France to speak English because learning a target language has its challenges. Before then, my path was clear just as any university graduate pursuing their life’s dream in tv production and marketing. After two years of working in those sectors back to back I lost my job and that was a catalyst that taught me about life and change. Moreover , deeply understanding that change is the only thing that’s constant.
Now, Oui, Oui, is more than a campaign but a bicultural and bilingual lifestyle company. I have curated many programs, initiatives, met people from all walks of life and shared countless memes on social media… I am looking forward to do more!
So simply put … whatever you want to accomplish in la vie, you can do it whilst afraid; however, you must be consistent and always do it with conviction. If you do get tired on your journey, learn to rest and don’t quit.

p.s: What’s your favorite thing about being bilingual?
Crème brûlée, which literally means burnt cream, is a dessert of custard–topped with caramelized sugar. My first time ever ordering this dessert was about 15 years. It was at a bistro in le quartier de la Bastille and ever since then, Oui, Oui — you guessed it, crème brûlée is usually my first choice when ordering dessert in a resto. I mean , pourquoi pas? This creamy custard leaves me craving for more.
Thanks to Mon Petit Four’s, Beeta Hashempour, you too can recreate this decadent recette for yourself or guests. Bon app!
Creamy vanilla custard baked until set, then topped with a caramelized sugar topping.
Ingredients
2 cups heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla bean paste
6 tbsp granulated sugar
4 egg yolks
turbinado sugar, or any kind of coarse sugar granules, for the top
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 320°F. Bring a kettle
full of water to a boil. Meanwhile, In a medium saucepan, warm the
cream just until it’s beginning to simmer along the edges of the pan.
Don’t let the cream boil! Stir in the vanilla bean paste once the cream
is warm. Turn the heat off.
In a medium
bowl, whisk the egg yolks and the granulated sugar together until thick
and pale. Stream in 1/4 cup of the hot cream mixture, whisking
vigorously as you do. Continue to stream in another 1/4 cup, again
whisking the entire time. Pour in the rest of the hot cream and whisk
until everything is blended together.
Use a ladle to distribute the batter among 5 (6 oz.) ramekins.
Place the ramekins in a large casserole dish and place the dish in the
oven. Use the kettle spout to pour the hot water into the casserole
dish, pouring enough water so that the water almost reaches the top of
the ramekins. Be careful not to get any water into the ramekins.
Bake
the custard for 1 hour just until the centers are slightly wobbly. If
needed, after 1 hour, raise the heat to 350°F and bake for another 10
minutes until you’ve achieved the desired doneness. Remove the ramekins
from the casserole dish and let them cool to room temperature. Wrap the
ramekins tightly in plastic wrap and freeze.
To brulee, sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of the turbinado sugar over each frozen creme brulee. Set the ramekins on a baking sheet
under the oven broiler (500°F) for about 1 minute, constantly checking
it and rotating the pan so that all of them are evenly bruleed. Let the
burnt sugar topping set for a few minutes before serving.

If you decide to make this recipe for 2 people, divide the recipe in half and use 8 oz. ramekins.

A piece of Paris in Jersey but where exactly you might ask?? In Montclair of course! Le French Dad Boulangerie & Café situated on Church Street, is owned by a ‘French Dad,” Arben Gasi.
As many dads around the world celebrate La fête des Pères, aujourd’hui, we wanted to get insight from Monsieur Gasi, who has lived in three different countries of what it means to be ‘ un papa,’ baker and businessman.
O.O.J.S.F: What is your role as a dad?
A.G: My role as a dad is to accompany our children through their education and various activities such as sports as well as cooking.
O.O.J.S.F: Where did you grow up?
I was born in Sarajevo and moved to France at age 12. In France, I lived in Albertville, Montauban and spent my last few years studying in Toulouse.
O.O.J.S.F: What is your educational/professional background?
A.G: I have a degree in mechanical engineering but ended up being a baker/owner of a French bakery in Montclair, NJ called Le French Dad.
O.O.J.S.F: Where did you grow up?

O.O.J.S.F: What languages do you speak?
A.G: I speak serbo-croatian, French and English.
O.O.J.S.F: As a dad, are you teaching your kids to be bilingual, if so, how?
A.G: Yes, my wife is French so we speak French at home. We also try to read to them in French and watch cartoons or movies in French as well.
O.O.J.S.F: How do you manage being a dad and a businessman?
A.G: It is very difficult to manage both and sometimes the latter takes over to my biggest regret. The moments we spend together are very very precious and we make sure to make most of it.
O.O.J.S.F: What’s your daily schedule like as the owner and head baker of Le French Dad?
A.G: I wake up around 2-3am everyday and head over to the bakery for my first coffee of the day. Depending on the day, I make bread, pastries or macarons, look for any special orders we might have for instance. When the bakery opens at 8am, I double check that we have everything ready for the day. Then it’s usually continuing on to producing, placing orders, making schedules for the week. I am usually out by 3pm at the latest to pick up our children from school.
O.O.J.S.F: How is French parenting different from the American way of parenting?
A.G: I believe French parenting is more straightforward and teaches children boundaries in all aspects. Not only educationally but culinary as well. Our children are a little more adventurous when it comes to food than their American friends.
O.O.J.S.F: What’s your favorite thing to do with your kids?
A.G: I love playing soccer with them and be outside. We usually go to the park nearby on our scooters or bikes. We also have a movie night where we make our own pizza and watch a movie all together. We try to do this every Friday or Saturday.
O.O.J.S.F: What qualities do you instill in your kids as they grow?
A.G: We’d like them to be kind and respectful but also honest.
O.O.J.S.F: As a baker, what pastry or baguette best describe you? And Why?
A.G: It would be a pain de campagne, or country loaf. Hearty, whole grain, rugged but nourishing.
O.O.J.S.F: What French traditions do you still uphold in your family?
A.G: It is mainly food/dinner related as we try to instill the love of home made food. That means no eating between meals, have a “goûter” and avoid as much as possible sweets and candy.
O.O.J.S.F: What makes French pastries and baguettes different from others?
A.G: They are unique and always trying to be balanced nutritionally. Moderation is key.

This month’s Franglais Stories, I chatted with Mame Awa M’Baye about the role of women, her move back to Senegal and self-care.
So Awa, as I fondly call her was my first contact to Senegalese food, dance and music. She has moved quite a lot and recently moved back to Senegal to achieve her childhood dream of working for the UN and contribute to the development of Africa. She is a Finance Officer at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to eradicating rural poverty and hunger. Awa is responsible for overseeing project financial management practices including financial reporting, audit, project liquidity management and fiduciary compliance in IFAD-funded projects for a portfolio of countries in West and Central Africa.
O.O.J.S.F: March was Women’s Month and April 2nd was Equal Pay Day. How do you see the role of women progressing in today’s society?
M.A.M: A month to me seems extremely minuscule for the celebration of women given our role in society. Most importantly, I believe that just the simple fact that there is the discussion about women celebration is symptomatic of a problem. It shows that equality between men and women in today’s society is still not a reality. We should aim to arrive at a point where pay is not dependent on your gender, to where your success is not dependent on your gender, but most importantly to where our little girls are not made to believe that they cannot achieve certain things just because they were born female.
While we are working towards that which I dream of, a society where men and women are fully equal, I believe that women should be celebrated year-round. Not just through simple parties where they are all dressed alike (in the case of Senegal), or in the form of an annual forum (often the case for development agencies) but most importantly through having continuous dialogues about the plight of women and finding structural solutions to barriers placed in front of us.
O.O.J.S.F: Do you think there has been advancements in the livelihoods of women?
M.A.M: There have indeed been great advancements in the livelihoods of women. If I simply compare situation, my independence, my opportunities to that of my grandmothers I am amazed by the large differences. Both of them were extremely brave stay at home mothers without any formal schooling. I on the other hand have been privileged enough to get a higher education.
O.O.J.S.F: How many languages do you speak? What are they? And do you find difficulty being multilingual?
M.A.M: I speak three languages fluently; Wolof my mother-tongue, English being raised and schooled in the US and French from having lived in Belgium for nearly 10 years.
I believe that language is an important tool in today’s multinational society. Being multilingual is a blessing both professionally and personally. It has contributed to my befriending of folks from different backgrounds and for that I am truly fortunate. I always brag that none of my friends look alike or are from the same origins. This is something that I try to instill in my children whom are also multilingual.
O.O.J.S.F: What’s on your playlist? Or any song you would like for readers to listen to!
M.A.M: Although I love music, I must admit that I have not really been listening much of it during the past year. So let me just suggest my nearly 2-year-old daughter’s favorite song: Djadja by Aya Nakamura.
O.O.J.S.F: If you could write a letter to your 12-year-old self, what would it start with?
M.A.M: My first two sentences to younger Awa would be, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and YOU ARE WORTHY. Having suffered a lot of emotional abuse at a very young age, I felt completely worthless at 12. Happy that I grew up to understand my struggles do not define me, but what defines me is how I overcame them.
O.O.J.S.F: How do you culturally identify yourself?
M.A.M: I have always struggled with this. Not in the sense that I do not know who I am, but more so that I believe that human beings are too complex to be labeled.
I am a byproduct of multiple cultures and cherish each one of them. Thanks to my diversified background, I am able to connect with folks from all walks of life. Ultimately, I am African, I am American and I am European. Each of these continents has greatly contributed to the person I am today. I thank Africa for my sense of community, I thank America for my confidence and the belief that anything is possible, and I thank Europe for teaching me the importance of a healthy work-life balance.
O.O.J.S.F: What does it mean to be a woman?
M.A.M: Being a woman means I am strong, I am a survivor, and it means that I am able to do a million things at once and do them well. I can cook, clean, help my son with his homework all while lifting a friend’s spirits on the phone. Most importantly, it means that I am the backbone of society because we all know that without women the world crumbles ☺
O.O.J.S.F: What does it mean to be a mother?
M.A.M: Being a mother is my greatest accomplishment. Through my pregnancies, I learned that women are extremely resilient beings. To have a human growing inside of you and being able to bond with them before they arrive on earth is a true blessing. My children are my motivators. They are at the root of all of my decisions as my ultimate goal is for them not to encounter half my struggles. My wish for them is to go to the best schools, to be part of the next generation of leaders for the African continent but most importantly to be happy in whatever they choose to dedicate themselves.
O.O.J.S.F: What advise do you have for women or mothers?
M.A.M: My advice is for working mothers; I believe that we often feel guilty about not spending enough time with our children because of work obligations. It is imperative to understand that it is not the quantity but the quality of time that we spend with our children that matters. At first, I greatly wrestled with this feeling, especially on those long days in the office where you get home and the kids are already in bed. I had to learn and understand that we are there for them when it matters and that is all our children care about. For them, what ultimately matters is, knowing that they can count on mommy whenever they need her.

O.O.J.S.F: Where should we visit and what to do when in Senegal and Belgium?
M.A.M: For Senegal, one should definitely visit Goree Island, a tiny picturesque island off the coast of Senegal mainly known for its role in the Atlantic slave trade. Afterwards, I suggest a road trip to Joal-Fadiouth, in my opinion the most beautiful village in Senegal also illustrative of the larger Senegal where Muslims and Christians live in harmony.
For Belgium, visit the Citadel in Namur from which at a glance you see the Confluence of the Meuse and the Sambre rivers. One of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen in my life.
O.O.J.S.F: What word or mantra do you try to live by each day?
M.A.M: Do not let people change you. I think sometimes we have a tendency to retaliate when people mistreat us. However, as you’re retaliating you are actually becoming that which you detest. Basically, keep being yourself and do not let anyone negatively change you.
O.O.J.S.F: What is a day like for you?
M.A.M: I travel a lot for work. But on the days that I am home, I wake up in the morning, drop my son off to school, head to work, come home to make dinner, get the kids to bed and if time permits, I watch a bit of news before heading to bed.
O.O.J.S.F: What does self-care mean to you?
M.A.M: As you can see in the previous question, I have been pretty bad at dedicating some time to myself. Self-care has been the least of my worries in the midst of recently moving back to Senegal due to this new position and struggling a bit getting readjusted to the country after over 25 years abroad. I was struggling with an environment that I found chaotic, unable to understand the lack of structure.
When my husband stated that he noticed the country changing me, a change that I too have noticed, I knew something had to be done. I have since enrolled myself for boxing lessons, which has been an amazing stress reliever.
As working moms, it is important to make some time for ourselves. We are busy running around taking care of others and forget about us in the process. A lot of people depend on us for emotional and mental support, so it is vital that we also take care of ourselves.

Oui, Oui, in a couple of hours, “Game of Thrones” will wrap up its 8th season. GOT as the very cool people refer to it, is a dark fantasy show with kings, queens, and dragons in Westeros fighting for the Iron Throne. [Spoiler alert]. Ok, now there’s just one left.
Over the years, fans have had characters that they loved and some that they hated. Those characters that are loved have arcs that have not quite changed except mostly in this season. People have fallen so much in love with the arcs of GOT characters that they have named their bébés after them. [Just hope no Francophonie has done this].
Arya is now a common American name. Guess parents love that Arya’s character is a trained assain and a badass who seeks revenge on people with brown, blue and green eyes.
Khaleesi is the name for queen in the fictional Dothraki language, is another character name parents have chosen for their kids. Could be that these parents want someone with leadership qualities and possible skills to ride a dragon.
Whatever happens tonight, some fans of “Game of Thrones” will be mad and others will be content with the series finale. According to CNBC.com, an estimated 4.9 million Americans will extend the mourning period for their favorite HBO fantasy epic well beyond that evening and skip work the following day.
As always, there’s no better way to truly learn a language but through swear words [gros mots]. And if you have never cursed, don’t read further 🙂
